Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after a person experiences or witnesses a deeply distressing event. Not everyone who goes through trauma will develop PTSD, but for some people the effects can be long-lasting and significantly affect daily life. According to Healthdirect, about
12 in every 100 Australians will experience PTSD at some time in their lives.
Symptoms can appear soon after a traumatic event or emerge months later, and may include intrusive memories, heightened anxiety, changes in mood, and difficulty with everyday activities. They can intensify during periods of stress or when a person encounters reminders of the trauma.
Current treatments help many people, but they don't work equally well for everyone. This trial is evaluating a once-daily investigational tablet that works by
supporting the function of astrocytes, cells in the brain and nervous system that play a role in how we process and respond to stress, to assess whether it can help reduce PTSD symptoms in people living with the condition.
