About this trial

How the bird flu vaccine trial works

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and avian influenza H5 are not just seasonal bugs; they can cause serious illness, particularly in infants, older adults, and people with chronic conditions. RSV is one of the leading causes of respiratory hospitalisation in Australia, placing significant pressure on families and the healthcare system every winter.

Australia confirmed its first human H5N1 case in 2024, and while H5 infections remain rare, they carry a high risk of severe illness when they do occur. Globally, the ongoing spread of H5N1 across continents continues to raise the risk of future outbreaks, making vaccine research increasingly urgent.

This trial is evaluating new vaccines designed to protect against flu viruses, testing different lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations to understand which works best. The findings will directly inform the development of future vaccines for avian influenza H5.
This stage of the trial focuses on the Bird Flu H5 vaccine group. Participants attend 8 clinic visits over 7 months and may receive up to two vaccine doses a few weeks apart.
